What is the Young Leaders’ Scheme?
The Young Leaders’ Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout section. All leaders in the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of a Young Leaders Unit. They are Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section.
The Young Leaders’ Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.

Everyone who is a Young Leader in Tynemouth Scouts must be registered with the Young Leader Unit (contact Matthew below), and undertake some basic training, to help them complete their role well and safely.
Some Explorers help with a section while completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award’s Service. They must also register with the Young Leader unit, and complete the basic training (the training time counts as service hours), in order for their service to count for DoE.
Most Young Leaders choose to come along to our monthly meeting (details to follow), and receive further training and support with their role, as well as having a fun time and meeting other Young Leaders. The training we complete at Young Leader meetings helps you to progress through your Adult Leader training when you turn 18 (should you wish to take up an appointment).
Young Leaders is free for all participants aged 14-18 to attend and complete. We do recommend however that participants also join an additional Explorer Unit to get the most out of their Scouting, experience trips, adventures and international events and to achieve some of the top awards in Scouting.
Guidance for Group Beaver, Cub and Scout Leaders
If you have a Young Leader helping in your unit can you please ensure that they contact the Young Leader Team and ensure they are registered as part of the scheme. They have 3 months to complete their Module A: Prepare for take-off (essentials and expectations) which includes safeguarding, risk assessments and other essential information.
You can also help us by sharing their record on OSM with the Young Leader Section “Tynemouth Scouts: Young Leaders” to ensure we all work off the same record. Please also let us know if or when your Young Leaders move on so we can close their records too!
