More than 1200 members of Northumberland County Scouts and Guides have spent the bank holiday weekend under canvas at Gosforth Park as part of the Scout County centenary celebrations.

The campers ranged from Cub Scouts aged 8 up to Adult Leaders and Scout Fellowship. They came from all over the Scout County, including people from Tynemouth, Newcastle, Whitley Bay, Cramlington, Bedlington, Alnwick and Morpeth, to name just a few of the areas.

The camp started on Friday and they were joined on Saturday by over 300 Beaver Scouts, the youngest of the youth sections, as well as a number of local dignitaries.

Richard Brown, Assistant County Commissioner for the Scouts said “Everyone has had a really good weekend, we organised over 50 different activity bays for people to do ranging from crafts such as candle making right up to riding on a rigid raider with the Royal Marine Reserves” he added “the most popular activities have been the quad bikes, the climbing walls and the zip line but that doesn’t mean the other activities have been forgotten about”

Gwyn McKenzie, County Commissioner said “the team of volunteer organisers have put a lot of time and effort into making the lookwide marra camp a success but it has been really worth it. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the camp” she added “all of the activities have been well used all weekend, people have used catapults and air rifles, been on bouncy castles but also done some of the more traditional Scout skills such as map and compass work on the orienteering course and backwoods cooking which is done on an open fire without any utensils”.
