Sanderson Flag Winners
Congratulations to the 18th Tynemouth Cub Scouts on winning the Annual
County competition, the Sanderson Flag held on the 14th of May at Haydon
Bridge Sports Centre.
The Sanderson Flag competition was originally started by the Assistant
County Commissioner (Cubs), Miss Sanderson, in 1930 and is awarded to
the winning team of 6 Cubs at a County games competition.
The competition this year comprised of a number of games including a
field gun race, similar to the Royal tournament where the parts are
carried over an obstacle course, then re-assembled and in our case
pulled back round a slalom built of cones. They also had a large scale
game of darts to play, a game of accuracy throwing bean bags at distant
targets, a matching pairs game using some cards and even some pioneering
where they had to build a ships mast.
According to “Our Heritage”, the history of Tynemouth Scouting 1908 –
1978, the Sanderson Flag has only been won by Tynemouth twice since the
competition started. Once by the 19th Tynemouth in 1967 and then again
by the 11th Tynemouth in 1971, so this is a fantastic achievement.
